Lessons from my Leadership Journey

I consider it a privilege that I am asked to share with you the story of my life as a Muslim leader who had to struggle in the past because of the unfavorable if not notorious image of my town, practically a no-man’s land, a war-zone that saw bitter fights among feuding families and clans, of revolutionary guerillas versus government forces, where lawless and criminal elements were very bold to do their “trade” – be it hold-ups, robbery, kidnappings, sometimes even in broad daylight....

“The Initiatives of Private Sector in the Reintegration Process”

It takes a change in mindset and a change of heart for positive changes to truly happen. I had also learned that foreign investments are very VITAL for economic development, because it is they who have the discipline to make business sustainable, it is they who have better access to capital, it is they who have better access to market.

“NOT JUST A “DOCTOR”, BUT A HEALER”

When Doc Evelyn (Alabado) first broached to me the idea of my speaking before you today, I could hardly believe it, although I never doubted her seriousness. I said, how could I be the “right person” to speak when I am not in the medical profession. I am a farmer turned businessman. I consulted a Christian friend, a dear brother, and he said “Datu, healing, which doctors are traditionally identified with, need not only be physical.”....

“Bridging Leadership: The Datu Paglas Experience”

More than 20 years ago, the secluded town of Datu Paglas (population 30,000 plus) in Maguindanao Philippines, was considered a “no-man’s land”. I was a Mayor of this town, named after my family. “Bridging Leadership: The Datu Paglas Story”

This is a story that I would have preferred to be kept in the privacy of my life and my village and people, but then as fate would have it, it has now become the focus of international spotlight whenever the subject of peace and conflict is taken up, particularly these days when world terrorism has become big part of the world’s consciousness after September 11....
